Zuiken’s Self-Admonition

Do not abuse others, do not boast of yourself and do not be falsely humble. Instead, repent of your powerlessness with the deep awareness of being a true disciple of the Buddha and a nembutsu practitioner. Mix with others with a view to teaching them shinjin while keeping yourself above common concerns. Looking upon success in the secular world as vainglory, never forget the important matter of birth-and-death. Earnestly aspire to true emancipation and remain constantly diligent in reading the works of the patriarchs. Contemplating reverently the power of the Primal Vow, let us study deeply the Great Compassion.
