Namu Amida Butsu

This work is especially dedicated to Zuiken Saizo Inagaki, who sheds light on the pristine and original teachings of Jodo Shinshu (Shin Buddhism) for many people, including myself. I regard him as my soul teacher and I am very much influenced by his words and thoughts, which are deeply imbued with the Wisdom of Compassion of Amida Buddha. I read most of his writings available in Chinese language and I wish to share some of his golden words in this blog in English. Rev. George Gatenby and Mr. Gabriel Schlaefer have been kindly and untiringly assisting me to edit the translated essays so that they are readable and true to the intent of Sensei. May all partake of the wisdom of Shinshu teaching and be overpowered by the light of Amida Buddha.

Essay 115

The ocean of Vows:
Not about hearing,
Not about faith—
Only the calling sound, echoing.

Whether in the past or now, the persons who are born in the Pure Land are subject to the design or calculation of the Primal Vow-Power of Amida Tathagata for birth. They do not depend on their own wisdom in order to be born there.

Amida’s command is like the whooping sound of a crane, proclaiming, “I will save you just the way you are, in your present condition.” Thus, you will definitely be saved. All the wisdom, compassion, power of expediency, and great virtue-power of the Perfect Enlightenment are included within “the command of the Primal Vow, summoning us to trust it.” This one command is entirely trustworthy; no faith or peace of mind is to be sought apart from this. Do not look around! What use is it to you if you wander about indecisively for several decades? The problem is that people of today do not focus on one thing. If a person is willing to be attentive to one thing for his whole life, he will succeed.
